Wood Spirit

Do you have to treat outdoor wood before painting it?

I have a wood porch that I'm about to paint. I was going to sand it, prime it, and paint it. I just remembered about spirit-based wood treatment...Do I need to apply that or is it optional?

Hi,
I would use a solid deck stain the is ok to apply on horizontal surfaces.
