Wall Home
How do I tell if a wall is load bearing in my home before I knock it down?
I want to open up my house a little and knock down a wall but I don't want to cause damage to my home in the process.
If the ceiling joists above run perpendicular to it on either side of the wall, it is probably load bearing.
If the ceiling joists on both sides run parallel (the same direction) to the wall, it most likely isn't load bearing. The one exception to this rule is that if there is a wall upstairs that sits directly on this wall, it could be load bearing.
You really need to get a good builder, engineer or architect to look at it before you tear it out.
