Turning Blocks

What are some good ways to keep your home warm without turning on the heat?

I have two skylights, my kitchen ceiling is slanted and I think the heat may be rising to the top of the ceiling and out of the sky lights. I have blinds on all of my windows (except skylights) and sheer curtains. Is it better to have the curtains tied back or down to block out any draft? Does the plastic stuff that you put over your windows work on windows?

I'm just looking for ways to eliminate some of the cold without turning on the heat so early.

You can let the sunlight help during the day. But once it gets cold enough and dark, it will not help much. I live in a college house that has horrible insulation. We usually just leave the heater on at 55 - 60.. Then in our bedrooms we all just bought $10 little electric heaters. They warm up the space pretty quickly and it saves a lot of money since the only time you need to run them is when you are in the room. Our first year in the house we had a gas bill for $500+... Last year i think our high was slightly over $200.
