Quality Picture

whats a good camera with great picture quality in low light?

i've been looking at bunch of cameras and I can't really seem to find many cameras that takes good quality pictures in low light. Right now, I have a canon powershot sd 1000. It doesn't take the best pictures in the dark.
what should I be looking for in a camera? Or even recommend some?
I don't want a dslr, but something between basic and dslr.
