Fur Pelt
How do I prepare animal fur?
Say a rat or cat? How do I skin it to save the fur pelt. Nice to have as a memory of my pets when they die
It is very, very rare that a person would want the "skin" of their pet as a keepsake. Occasionally someone wants their dead pet mounted in a life-like position, but its skin only is extremely unusual.
As a professional X-Taxidermist, I could tell you how to do it, but it's rather complicated to get into here. A brief description is as follows:
1. - Remove skin carefully.
2. - Scrape any loose flesh off the underside.
3. - Lay it down indoors and cover it liberally with table salt (lots of it)
4. - After a couple of weeks when the skin is completely dried up, gently fold it up, pack it into a box.
5. - Ship the box to a Tannery. Make sure they will accept pet skin. Also, insist that when they tan the hide it's "fur on". Find them on the internet. I doubt they'd be willing to do a Rat. A Cat yes, but a rat probably not.
There is a way to cure and tan the skin yourself, but it is far too involved and complicated to explain here on YahooAnswers. It takes chemicals and powders that I doubt you'd want to pay for, and work I doubt you'd want to do.
